Genetic Diversity between Two South Florida Slash Pine Populations
نویسندگان
چکیده
South Florida slash pines provide an important microhabitat for some native Florida species, however, less than 1% of the original slash pine forest remains due to deforestation and hurricanes (DERM, 1995). This population decline makes it essential to study the genetic diversity of the remaining pine forest. Therefore, in this study we tested the hypothesis that geographic isolation has led to genetic diversity between two south Florida sites. We predicted that the genetic structure revealed by microsatellite loci would be different between the two populations. We went to two sites to collect South Florida slash pine leaf samples, extracted DNA, and genotyped it to identify the microsatellite alleles in each population. One microsatellite locus has alleles that differ between the two sites, but the other two loci have shared alleles. Therefore, we have some evidence that genetic diversity exists in South Florida slash pines, which might be due to geographic isolation. However, shared alleles suggest that some wind dispersal of pollen and/or bird dispersal of seeds may be allowing some tree DNA to travel, indicating the genetic connectivity between the two collection sites.

Slash Pine: Characteristics, History, Status, and Trends
-Slash pine is the premier tree species on many sites throughout the South. Its ease of establishment and early growth, however, has extended its range to many sites where its performance has been less than ideal. For that reason, the acreage and volume of slash pine are declining. Nonetheless, it will continue to be the favored species on many sites where it is the most appropriate and product...
متن کاملFire history and forest structure of an endangered subtropical ecosystem in the Florida Keys, USA
We focussed on the influence of historical fire and varied fire management practices on the structure of globally endangered pine rockland ecosystems on two adjacent islands in the Florida Keys: Big Pine Key and No Name Key. We reconstructed fire history in two stands from fire scars on South Florida slash pines (Pinus elliottii Engelm. var. densa Little & Dor.) that were accurately dated using...

متن کاملEconomic Sustainability of Payments for Water Yield in Slash Pine Plantations in Florida
Forests play an important role with respect to water resources, and can be managed to increase surfaceand groundwater recharge. With the creation of a forest water yield payment system, privately-owned forests, which comprise the majority of forest area in the Southeastern US, could become an important potential source of additional water supply. The economic tradeoffs between timber revenues a...
